The Paradox of Vulnerability

By Grace Hui for Incentre

Vulnerability can sometimes be a topic that is difficult to discuss, discern and integrate. It is at once a feeling and a concept which can trigger the emotions while sending the logical mind into a tailspin. Yet, it is also true that it is only when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable that we find the space to grow.

When we dwell in our vulnerability, we run the risk of becoming attached to our feelings of victimisation and fall into victimhood. Yet, when we try to control everything so that we never ever allow ourselves the space to be vulnerable, we serve our negative ego and never allow ourselves the gift of discomfort.

Some might argue that discomfort is a cross to bear and best to be avoided at all cost. Yet, there is great merit in discomfort. Only in embracing some discomfort can we truly learn about ourselves and while it may sound like a contradiction, it is only in truly knowing ourselves that we can grow.

After all, when we know ourselves, we will understand why we feel vulnerable. We will learn about our triggers and what we need healing from. From there, we take responsibility for what triggers us and become accountable to ourselves to create what it is that our higher selves truly desire.

No discomfort, no expansion

Our society is a fast paced one where subconsciously or otherwise, we are driven to move from one thing to the next. If something doesn’t go our way, or according to plan, we usually move on to the next thing without giving ourselves the space to process and integrate. We want to move from a state of happiness to another state of happiness without getting acquainted with the space in between - the space of vulnerability that helps us to live in a state of joy no matter what.

This may sound like a paradox. We need to be vulnerable enough to grow but not vulnerable enough to become stuck in victimhood.

How then do we find balance? What is the sweet spot between vulnerability that permits expansion and remaining stuck in vulnerability that leads to victimhood?

Unpacking vulnerability in its fullness

The dance with vulnerability can be a beautiful process of flow and control. While we allow it to surface and sit with it, we also have to take the action that is necessary to heal from what has caused that vulnerability in the first place.

Allowing the vulnerability and sitting with it is but the first step. It is incomplete if we do not also take ownership of our own healing.

Vulnerability is an incredible opportunity for growth - but, only if we embrace it in all its fullness.

Don’t escape from it. Face it. Allow it to flow. Then, take control by becoming responsible for healing what the vulnerability revealed about yourself. Be accountable to yourself for your own healing.

Vulnerability in the eternal paradigm

Often times, we fear feelings of discomfort because they can be painful, confronting and downright unpleasant. Yet, if we are able to take ourselves out of the attachment to the fear of such discomforts and embrace the eternal paradigm, we will realise that none of these things are permanent.

We are eternal beings and if we live from that perspective, we will understand that everything moves and changes continually. Our feelings of discomfort are therefore only passing through. Why fear that which is not permanent?

As the saying goes : “This too shall pass!”

If vulnerability is viewed and experienced from the standpoint of us being eternal beings, it is a lot less scary and a lot less insurmountable.

Eternity and the Divine

We are all eternal beings with the divine spark. In other words, we are not only eternal beings but also divine ones! Let’s pause to really consider the enormity of this truth.

Yes, we are so powerful that we are both eternal as well as divine. This physical existence is but an experience and this too shall pass!

Why allow our attachment to the fear of the discomfort that vulnerability can bring when this is but a fleeting moment from the vastness of divinity and eternity?

Of course, in the density of our physicality, embracing our eternal selves can seem like an airy fairy idea that is difficult to grasp. After all, we have only been taught to perceive that which is tangible. We have not been taught to tap into what is intangible but every bit as valuable and real. We have been programmed to only see what is solidly in the three dimensional sphere without having been trained to perceive what can only be perceived in stillness - that which is outside the 3 dimensions that we are so logically wedded to.

Yet, if you have read this far, it is because you know inside that somehow, we are much bigger than just our physical bodies. How then do we cut away the mind fog that keeps us separated from our divine selves and our divine purposes?

In many ancient traditions, that which is perceived in the physical and that which is perceived energetically are united as a whole. There is no separation in that sense. Both types of perception are necessary and work together to serve us both as beings in the physical and in eternity.

While modern life does not always allow us to cut through the density of our minds, there is an ancient lineage- based activation that can help. The Modern Mystery School provides an activation that helps us to reconnect to the wisdom of our higher selves. Through balancing the elemental lines, the magnetic lines and the chakras and activating the strands of DNA that are dormant, we can be reawakened to see the magnificent splendour of our true selves. There is great clarity in the process akin to suddenly finding the right reading glasses so that the page is once again clear once more.

When we are reconnected to our divine selves and understand the power of our eternity, we can allow vulnerability for what it is - a passing phase for growth.

The duality of vulnerability

As with anything, there is duality. Something can be at once good and bad. It all just depends on how we choose to look at it and what actions we choose to take from it.

There is nothing inherently bad or good about being vulnerable. It is but an opportunity - a chance to do something with it.

If we avoid ever being vulnerable, we will never get to know ourselves and, if we don’t know ourselves, then we will never really be empowered or free. We will always be swayed by what happens to us and our happiness will always be dependent on things we cannot control. If we knew ourselves, we will be able to cultivate the stillness that brings about a state of joy. The external is but a reflection of our inner states.

As within so without, as above so below.

If we embraced vulnerability but never take ownership for healing from what has caused it in the first place, then we remain as we are, aware of our wounds but unable to move past it. So while allowing is an important first step, we cannot stop there if we wish to truly live freely.

The true nugget of expansion comes from viewing vulnerability as a gift to knowing ourselves, sitting with it to give it the space it needs and then taking the actions needed for us to heal from it.

If we can master this, we will truly be free. We will truly be empowered.
